Ms. Zeny P. Sabocor, president and chair of this year’s Independence Ball moved through the preparation like a gentle force of nature with her gestures and speech, as everyone around may well remain under a spell. Her passionate commitment makes Kalayaan Incorporated such a joy to work among the volunteers, staff and the Fil-Am Community itself.
Mrs. Sabocor, never looks at the clock, but only in her heart in every way she can help with her irresolute enthusiasm and labor of love—a selfless commitment, devoting her moves and shakes to help get where she wants Kalayaan Incorporated to go.
She has steered this enormous event with gracious disposition through a thicket of negotiations and paperwork, all the while being wholeheartedly in a gold mine of facts and reasons as she reaches everyone working around her with the goodness of her heart and the sweetness of her spirit. These are the capable professionals, business leaders, and a rich harvest of educated, enlightened, empowered selfless civic leaders.
At Kalayaan Incorporated, there are 39 bosses with President Zeny P. Sabocor as the engine driving the tram. Without discounting, it could at times be a perilous journey. She is making the decisions, but the board can direct the process, towards that decision by providing the facts and analyses on their parallel efforts and common goals. The board directors feel that the broad assertions of presidential executive powers have to be tempered. They are the censors that make leaders responsive to people; they point out when there is an elephant in the room, when working in a time frame. The chair, while publicly acknowledged as once the “golden oil” of the real estate world, and the pure sparkling water of the board of directors, somehow never had issues on their independent existence.
They collectively believe that a mark of character is being able to operate and function under different circumstances, and not lose their perspective.
The interview:
How can a notepad and pen capture a frame of mind, a disposition, a temperament or body language? This interview as written skips such known incidents such as when Mrs. Sabocor (she insists, call me Zeny, please) was former Chair of the United Bicolandia Los Angeles Board of Directors, the Penafrancia Festivities that became more that just a religious splendor. We already know how she has charmed people into a network support, doing more than they should under her favorite catch phrase – “Let’s unite!” and “Mabalos”
MDL: What is it really like to be on top of this year’s grandest, biggest Fil-Am celebration?
ZPS: It is important to know what you’re good at, I am pathologically optimistic. I didn’t think it was that hard to achieve: we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel, or come up with a new overarching version, the scenario had no boundary issue, just a collective effort to bring about a successful 117th Independence Day Celebration, the fun mirth and glee. We were going to have when the whole road show goes South. We warded off the problematic, nothing is insoluble including sweeping opinions, prejudices limitations and simply welcomed depths of insights, we researched into everything. Josie de Jesus, my co-chair was a precious tandem, together we researched into everything, with or committees of experts to solve each problem that arose, every detail was clearly seen and solved, with new values coming to birth. Suspension of judgment prevailed to inculcate deepened awareness that will achieve responsibility among members.
MDL: You speak of the Grand Ball of Balls with such detachment, not anyone is elected as chairman on this biggest celebration Ms. Zeny.
ZPS: Because the committee has to be careful not to offend. It is not the greatest satisfaction in life. It is something that encourages me in life. There is the constant search for something better. I have always been ready to listen to the opinions of others and look for a positive element in them. In their dignity, which is the strengthening of the spirit…but I don’t believe in bending the rules…never!
MDL: Ms. Zeny, human beings are so delightfully human, what is your greatest strength?
ZPS: I am instinctive. I trust my gut feeling. You try to foresee, predict, reconcile and overcome everything to accomplish your goals. If sweet reason did not work, I move issues with raw will.
MDL: In what way did this year’s celebration surpass the previous years in terms of dignity, character and importance?
ZPS: It has? You really think it did? I am a perfectionist. I believe in a personalized way of dealing with every conceivable issue. The event did not need any cheerleading—perhaps some little changes—but most of all it was collective efforts, selflessness and determination to make it better.
MDL: Now, we come to the personal question, Mr. Serry Sabocor is perceived as your most trusted ally.
ZPS: That is a correct observation, he is indeed my trusted ally, which I can say with tender pride. Men are important in one’s life, especially if they are charming and handsome, and it also happens to be your husband. That explains my excess respect for him. His honesty and faithfulness, and his strength of steel sooth, temper, and shape our family in a mantle of love, which arms us for life’s challenges and its pits.
